Dr. Smith graduated from North Schuylkill High School in 1989 and went on to Bloomsburg University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. Upon graduating from Bloomsburg University, Michael began his career in healthcare as a Physician Liaison with Geisinger Health System. He also met his wife Sabrina, and they began their lives together.

While at Geisinger, he grew and worked in medical education and ended his time there as Surgical Operations Manager. Along with his time at Geisinger, he found education to be a passion of his and developed and led the Master of Healthcare Informatics program at Misericordia University. He built the program from the ground up, and it became successful for the university, with other educational institutions then asking him to collaborate on building programs for them.

In 2017, his greatest accomplishment and his proudest moment occurred when his daughter Harper Grace Smith was born.

Also during this time, he earned two different master's degrees — a Master of Science in Sport Management from California University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Health Science from Saint Francis University. His love for education continued, and he began pursuing his Doctor of Education from the University of New England.

He successfully defended his dissertation and earned his Doctor of Education from the University of New England in 2019. That year was one of change as his family moved to Murrells Inlet, SC, where he helped launch a new mini hospital for Tidelands Health. In 2021, he began working for Kyruus, a high-tech healthcare company, where he oversees their implementation team. They build apps and provide technology to healthcare providers to help their patients achieve a mobile check-in process.

He is honored and humbled to achieve this award and acknowledges that he would not be successful without his time spent at North Schuylkill.
